The present report was first published in the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) Outlook 2011. The focus of this research is on sport as a tool for cultural diplomacy. Although international competitions may sometimes represent a threat to universal peace, and exacerbate tensions, most of the time sport offers its best in this context: a universal language, shared by all the people around the world. It enables them to meet peacefully, and provide the opportunity to launch peaceful initiatives. In this publication, four core elements related to sports as cultural diplomacy have been identified:
- Sport as a tool for development
- Sport as a tool for soft power
- Sport as an instrument to promote closer dialogue and integration in multicultural societies
- Sport as a tool to promote peaceful relations at the international level
Moreover, 10 examples of relevant projects have been included in this research. The main objective is to provide the readers with a solid theoretical background on sports as cultural diplomacy and an insight into some practical initiatives. Please find the full report below.
